I was stretching my Studie 'cross country when after lunch in a tavern in Wyoming I bought a Smith & Wesson 38 caliber Police Special on a whim. Later on that trip, my buddy and me got roused up from a late night nap by the local law. They held us at the station for an hour or so while they checked the Wanted Lists, but we weren't so they handed over my loaded pistol and waved us on our way. You gotta love being dumb and white in the American West.

Eventually, the influence of higher education led to the disposal of both car and gun, the costs of books and tuition being what they are. If I hadn't got that education, I doubt I would have missed it.
But I still miss that car and gun.
